Preseason Soccer Injuries: The Fueling That Keeps Players on the Field
Every August, the same story plays out. A player trains all summer, shows up to preseason fit and motivated, and then, about two weeks in, something gives. A tweaked hamstring. A cold that lingers for multiple weeks. Or just a strange flatness, where the legs that felt great in July suddenly feel a step slow.
If you are a parent watching this happen, it is easy to assume your athlete needs to push harder, stretch more, or add the supplement a teammate swears by. Usually, none of those is the real issue. When a fit, motivated player breaks down two weeks into preseason, it is rarely an effort problem. It is a fueling problem.
Preseason is the most injury-prone stretch of the soccer calendar, and how an athlete eats through it has a lot to do with whether they stay on the field or spend September on the sideline. Here is what actually drives those breakdowns, and the five fueling moves that keep athletes healthy when training ramps up.
Why preseason is when soccer players get hurt
The main reason is the jump. After a lighter, less structured summer, training suddenly climbs. More sessions, longer sessions, sometimes two in a single day. The body is being asked to do far more than it did a few weeks earlier, and it has to catch up fast.
That sudden climb is the setup. Research on competitive runners has found that rapid increases in training load, relative to what the body is used to, line up with a higher risk of injury. The same pattern shows up across team sports, and it is why injury rates during training tend to run higher in preseason than once the season settles in. Muscle strains and nagging tendon issues are the usual suspects.
Here is the part that gets missed. The load jump is the trigger, but under-fueling that jump is the multiplier. When training doubles and the plate stays exactly the same as it was in summer, the body is left with less material to repair tissue, less to recover with between sessions, and less to keep the immune system running. None of that shows up as a dramatic moment. It shows up quietly, as the strain that will not settle, the second session that falls apart, or the cold that keeps an athlete home for a week.
An athlete can do the hard part, showing up and putting in the work, and still get undercut by a plate that never changed. The good news is that this is the controllable part.
Five fueling moves that keep soccer players on the field
1. Fuel the training jump
The week training doubles is not the week to eat like it is still summer. Intake has to climb with the workload. In practice, that means a carbohydrate source at every meal to keep energy topped up, protein at each meal to supply repair, and simply more food on the hardest training days. Carbohydrates matter here more than most families expect, because when an athlete trains on empty, the body starts pulling from its own tissue to keep going.
2. Refuel the window between two-a-days
Two-a-days, or a practice followed by a scrimmage, leave a gap in the middle of the day. That gap quietly decides how the second session feels and how well the athlete recovers for tomorrow. Within about an hour of finishing the first session, the goal is to get in carbohydrates, a protein source, and fluids. It does not need to be complicated. Chocolate milk and a banana, a sandwich and water, or a rice bowl all work. Refuel that window and the second session runs on a full tank instead of an empty one.
3. Spread protein across the day
Most athletes eat enough protein, but they stack it all at dinner. The body repairs all day, so it needs building material all day. Research in adults published in the Journal of Nutrition found that spreading protein evenly across breakfast, lunch, and dinner raised muscle protein synthesis about 25 percent compared with saving most of it for the evening meal. The practical version is simple: a protein source at breakfast, at lunch, and after training, rather than one big pile at night.
4. Build tissue and bone with real food
The tendons, ligaments, and bone that take the load in preseason are built from what an athlete eats. Pairing protein with a vitamin C food around training, think peppers, citrus fruits, or berries, gives the body the raw materials to build connective tissue. Bone needs support too. In a study of more than 800 college athletes, those who corrected low vitamin D had far fewer stress fractures than those who stayed low, which is a reminder that everyday nutrients like vitamin D and calcium quietly protect availability. This is also the honest answer to the supplement question, and we will come back to it below.
5. Treat recovery and sleep as fuel
Recovery is not the opposite of training. It is part of it. Sleep is the most underrated recovery tool an athlete has, and the numbers are striking. In a study of adolescent athletes in the Journal of Pediatric Orthopaedics, those who slept fewer than eight hours a night were about 1.7 times more likely to be injured than those who slept eight or more. Preseason is exactly when sleep gets squeezed, between early sessions and the return of school, so protecting it matters most right now. Steady hydration and not skipping meals on packed days round out the picture. A run-down body gets hurt and gets sick.
What a fueled preseason week actually looks like
Frameworks are easy to nod along to and harder to picture, so here is how the five moves land across a typical preseason week.
On a two-a-day. Breakfast is real and substantial before the morning session, something like eggs, oatmeal, and fruit. After the morning session, the between-session window gets its own refuel within about an hour, even if the athlete is not very hungry yet. That might be a smoothie or chocolate milk plus a sandwich. Lunch follows once appetite returns. The afternoon session then runs on fuel instead of fumes, and dinner focuses on recovery, with a protein source, plenty of carbohydrates, and colorful vegetables.
On a single-session day. The emphasis shifts to steady meals, protein at each one, and a snack before training so the session has something to run on. This is also the easiest day to get a full night of sleep, so it is a good target for an earlier bedtime.
On a scrimmage or friendly day. The athlete eats a familiar, carbohydrate-rich meal a few hours before, keeps it simple, and avoids trying anything new. Afterward, the recovery meal or snack comes sooner rather than later.
When appetite disappears. Hard training can blunt hunger, especially in the heat. The move is to go easy to eat and easy to drink: smoothies, chocolate milk, fruit, and yogurt all deliver fuel without asking the athlete to sit down to a big plate.
None of this requires overhauling everything at once. Picking one gap, the between-session window is a common one, and holding it steady for a week tends to do more than a dozen changes that do not stick.
What staying available looks like at the top
The environments I work in take this seriously for a reason. At a World Cup, senior or youth, the roster is locked for the entire tournament. If a player gets hurt or run down, there is no swapping in a healthy replacement. Staying available becomes everything, and nutrition, sleep, and recovery move straight to the front. Meals are built around the match schedule, and sleep is protected right down to details like blackout curtains and the right pillow.
None of that is a secret reserved for professionals. They are habits any competitive athlete can copy, starting this preseason. The phrase I come back to with the athletes I work with is simple: your best ability is your availability.

Almost never before the basics are handled. There is some early research worth knowing about. A small study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that taking gelatin with vitamin C before exercise doubled a marker of collagen building in the blood, a sign the body was making more connective tissue. That study measured a blood marker, not fewer injuries, and it was done in a small group of adults. The useful parts, protein and vitamin C, are already in everyday food. For a growing athlete who trains hard, being under-fueled will set them back far more than skipping a scoop of powder ever will. Handle the plate first. Then, if you still want to add something, it can have its place.
How much sleep does a teenage athlete need to lower injury risk?
Aim for eight hours or more a night. The research on adolescent athletes points to eight hours as a meaningful line, with athletes below it getting injured more often. Preseason can be the hardest time to hit that number and the most important, so an earlier bedtime is one of the highest-value changes an athlete can make right now.
